How to think about starting a change is something that I think all of us face. It’s one of those things that we know we want to do but we don’t know-how. Or even worse, we know that we want to do it but are afraid of doing it. In this article, I’ll share some tips on how you can start thinking about it and what it will involve.
The first thing you have to do is understand what the change means to people. There’s a very good book that I recommend if you’re interested in change efforts: Change Your Life. Read it, understand the concepts, and apply them to your situation.
Once you understand change, think about what life would be like if you can change just about anything you want. What kinds of things would change up? What would change for me? What things would change for you? What would it feel like?
Once you’ve thought about all the different answers to these questions, start writing them down. Don’t worry too much about writing down everything. Just start by listing the things that you’re afraid of or things you feel would be unpleasant. Do you have information on what you’re fearful of yet?
This is your first step toward analyzing your fears. From there, you’ll have a much better chance of changing your mind or at least understanding it better. After you’ve done this, you’ll be ready to really think about how you’ll approach change. The more you think about it, the more you’ll get motivated.
Next, think about when you want to change. Is it going to be tomorrow or this week or this month? The key here is that you start where you are. Choose the right goal for you.
Now, you can’t just choose any goal. You’ll need to pick something that is related to your current situation. For instance, if you’re afraid of losing control, you might want to focus on some sort of management course. That way, whenever you have a chance to review it, you’ll know exactly what to say and do. It will bring up something that you had previously not given much thought to.
Now that you know how to think about starting a change, you’ll have to figure out how to make it happen. The best way to do this is to start small. Focus on one thing at a time. Work hard until you reach your goal. If you do that, your fear will go away.
Finally, you’ll have to assess yourself. Think about where you are now emotionally. Is your emotional balance right? Are you in a good place or do you have some wiggle room where you’ll have to make changes to your emotional makeup?
Once you’ve figured out your personal issues, you’ll have to ask yourself how to think about starting a change. How much strength do you have in what you’re doing right now? Are you willing to give it a shot? If so, then good for you-now you just need to go get started!
Now, as you think about making a change, you’ll have to determine how you’ll pay for it. Will you have a salary increase? Do you have a family to support? What about health benefits? Can you work more hours? All these things can add up to increased expenses and that means you’ll have to budget for those things.
Lastly, you’ll need to consider the costs of a change. How much are you willing to pay for it? Are you willing to lay out money for a new start-up? Will you need to keep paying current employees their salaries for a while? Once you know what you can afford, you can start pricing things accordingly.
If you follow these basic steps, you’ll be well on your way to knowing how to think about starting a change. Remember that you don’t have to do everything all at once. Start off small and expand as you feel comfortable. Keep your head up, stay positive and soon you’ll be able to think clearly about making a change.
