The Detroit Lions creation of a coaching team comprised of former teammates continues, and this time they have dug up the previous Lions’ rosters. As per Justin Rogers of the Detroit News, the Lions hired Dre Bly as his new Cornerbacks Coach. The Lions have now officially confirmed the hiring.
You’ll probably be able to recall Dre Bly was one of the Lions’ most significant free-agent signings in 2003. After Bly was a winner of the Super Bowl with the Rams. Bly made two Pro Bowls in his Detroit period and scored 19 interceptions throughout four seasons. He played for 11 years in the league, intercepted 43 passes, and scored 150 passes he defended.
Bly joined the coaching ranks in 2018 when he was a part of the short-lived AAF as the defensive backs coach with the San Diego Fleet. The following month, Bly was named the cornerbacks’ coach at the University of North Carolina, his school of choice. He was there for the next four seasons before formally parting ways with the university in January.
The Lions had a significant shift in the secondary area during the season last year when they dismissed offensive backs’ head director Aubrey Pleasant midseason. Safety Coach Brian Duker and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn assumed some of Pleasant’s duties following his firing.
But, with Bly joining the group, Duker can now remain in charge of the safety aspects, and Glenn (if the team doesn’t offer him the head coaching job) can take on the more significant tasks associated with the team’s defensive coordinator.
