The New York Jets are looking to replicate the success of the Green Bay Packer’s offence by signing Aaron Rodgers’ former teammate, Randall Cobb. The 32-year-old wide receiver is expect to sign a one-year deal with the Jets. Making their receiving corps one of the best of Rodgers’ career.
Cobb and Rodgers played together for ten seasons and developed a close friendship. In fact, Rodgers demanded that the Packer’s front office re-acquire Cobb in 2021 trade with the Texans. Which led to two more seasons of the duo playing together. According to ESPN, only Davante Adams has caught more passes from Rodgers than Cobb in the regular season and playoffs combined.
Last week, Cobb posted a video of him working out on Instagram with the caption, “We may not know which way to go on this dark road…” This caught the attention of the Jets, who are now reportedly interested in signing him.
Allen Lazard, who left the Packers for the Jets before the Rodgers trade, joked about Cobb’s quick reaction to the trade news. “Bruh saw the trade go through and got right to it,” Cobb quipped. Former Packers quarterback Kurt Benkert also responded positively to the report. The Jets already have a strong group of receivers, including Garrett Wilson, who Rodgers has compared to Adams and Lazard. They also have Corey Davis, Denzel Mims, and Mecole Hardman, who was recently signed as a free agent. Adding Cobb would give Rodgers a familiar face and someone he trusts on and off the field.
Cobb could potentially split duties with Hardman in the slot position. The Jets surprisingly did not draft any receivers in the 2023 draft, so signing Cobb would fill a gap in their offence.
Last season, Randall Cobb had 34 catches for 417 yards and one touchdown in 13 games. Throughout his career, which includes stints with the Cowboys and Texans. He has recorded 625 catches for 7,585 yards and 53 touchdowns. He was reportedly on Rodgers.’ “wish list” during a pre-trade meeting with the Jets.
The Jets have also signed offensive tackle Billy Turner and third-string quarterback Tim Boyle. Who will all play under Rodgers-endorsed offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Head coach Robert Saleh has emphasized the importance of communication and ensuring that Rodgers does not have undue influence as a coach or general manager. “The thing with Aaron is that he’s not demanding anything,” Saleh said. “He just loves communication. We’re excited about his mindset and how he’s approaching this thing.”
